In early June 2018, the Student Experience Research Network (MSN) and the University of Texas at Austin’s Population Research Center will invite applications to join a year-long research network using the National Study of Learning Mindsets (NSLM) dataset, funded with generous support from the Bezos Family Foundation. The goal of this fellowship is to support early career scholars to use the NSLM data to test new ideas about mindset science, publish peer-reviewed journal articles, and build a network of interdisciplinary colleagues.

About the NSLM Fellowship Award

Scholars with successful proposals will receive support in the form of a stipend. In addition, the award will cover travel and expenses associated with two mandatory project meetings: the Orientation and Data Camp Kickoff on September 13-14, 2018 in Austin, Texas, and the Capstone Convening in Summer 2019. An academic manuscript and a brief summary of research for practice and policy audiences will be due in Fall 2019.

The NSLM Dataset

The NSLM was designed to understand which kinds of students, in which kinds of classrooms, and which kinds of schools are most likely to benefit from brief online interventions that foster adaptive learning mindsets. It is one of the only longitudinal studies of adolescent behavioral outcomes to use a randomized control design. The dataset features a wide array of student-, classroom-, and school-level measures and offers a nationally representative sample of high school students who can be followed through high school and beyond. As such, it is an invaluable resource for studying the influence of social psychological intervention on disparities in high school academic progress to and through the transition to postsecondary education. A detailed description of the NSLM data will be available when the application window opens.

Eligibility

• Open to advanced PhD students and early career scholars (e.g., postdoctoral fellows, research scientists, and assistant professors within 5 years of PhD completion) in the social sciences (e.g., psychology, sociology, economics), or related field
• Must reside in the US for the duration of the fellowship
• Must analyze large and complex database by writing reproducible syntax in Stata, R, or SAS. Other packages will be considered

Application Materials

Applicants submit the following materials:

• CV (not to exceed 2 pages)
• Abstract of project description and significance (150 words max)
• Project proposal that uses NSLM data to answer novel research questions (3 single-spaced pages max, including an appendix, but not including the abstract). The proposal should specify motivation for the research, explain the study objectives, describe the approach, and outline the dissemination plan and timeline
• Letter of recommendation from faculty sponsor (Graduate students only)
