National Study of Learning Mindsets

The National Study of Learning Mindsets (NSLM) was designed to understand which kinds of students, in which kinds of classrooms, and in which kinds of schools are most likely to benefit from a short online program designed to foster a growth mindset during the transition to high school.

The study is the largest-ever randomized controlled trial of an online growth mindset program in the United States in K-12 settings, and uses a nationally representative probability sample.

In addition to exploring variation in the effects of the growth mindset program, the study was designed to create a rich, longitudinal data set that would enable research by experts from multiple scientific disciplines on a broad array of research questions in education for years to come. The initial findings from the study on the effects of the growth mindset program were released in the journal Nature in 2019.
