Student Experience Research Network Virtual Convening
November 18-19, 2020

VISIONS FOR PRACTICE-RESPONSIVE RESEARCH

Welcome to the MSN 2020 Convening event page!

MSN looks forward to convening this community of scholars and leaders in the education sector. The convening will feature research presentations, discussions, and opportunities to connect and network. Links to event materials are woven throughout the agenda below.

Joining the MSN 2020 Convening

The convening will take place via the Zoom Meetings platform. If you do not already have a Zoom account, please create one in advance of the convening; if you already have an account, make sure to update to the latest version so that you have access to newly available Zoom features we will use at the convening. Instructions for updating Zoom are available here. MSN strongly encourages all attendees to join the convening through a video-enabled device (e.g., a laptop or desktop computer rather than an iPad or tablet) to ensure the best attendee experience, including the opportunity to see presenters and view their slides.

Joining Happy Hour

The virtual happy hour takes place on the Remo platform on Wednesday, November 18 at 2:00pm PT/ 5:00pm ET. This platform allows attendees to freely circulate at different tables and connect with colleagues to mirror the in-person experience.

Joining the Slack Conversation

There is a Slack channel for the MSN 2020 Convening! MSN encourages attendees to leverage this space to share important announcements ahead of the event that would typically be shared in person during the convening. You can also continue to use this space after the event to connect and collaborate. Click here to join.

Please see below for additional information and contact info@mindsetscholarsnetwork.org with any questions.

EVENT PLATFORMS

  • Zoom (main meeting platform) – The convening will take place via the Zoom Meetings platform.
  • Remo (happy hour platform) – The virtual happy hour takes place on the Remo platform on Wednesday, November 18 at 2:00pm PT/ 5:00pm ET. Remo allows attendees to freely circulate at different tables and connect with colleagues to mirror the in-person experience. Leverage this checklist to make sure you are set up and ready. To join, please use a desktop or laptop computer and select Chrome, Safari, or Firefox as your browser (other browsers and iPads/tablets will not work).
  • Slack (networking and connection) – Click here to join the MSN 2020 Convening Slack channel. MSN invites participants to share any announcements on the channel that they might typically share in person during the convening. MSN also encourages attendees to use this space after the event to continue to connect and collaborate.

FAQs

If you experience any technical difficulties prior to the event or are unable to join the Zoom meeting for any reason, please email info@mindsetscholarsnetwork.org. During the event, an MSN staff member will be assigned to provide individualized tech support; look for the participant who is named “Tech Support” and send them a 1:1 chat via Zoom if you are experiencing any issues.

There will be opportunities to connect and network during the convening through ice breakers, small group discussions, and the happy hour. By using the Remo platform for happy hour, attendees will be able to circulate between virtual tables and strike up conversations much like you would be able to do during an in-person convening. MSN has also created a Slack channel to provide another space where attendees can begin connecting and collaborating before the convening and continue after the convening formally concludes.

During panels and presentations, Slido, which was used at the 2019 Convening, will be embedded on this event page and used to capture attendees’ questions and comments. Attendees will be able to upvote and reply to each other’s responses, as well as participate in live polling and visualizations, such as word clouds and other graphs.

During the Small Group Feedback Sessions for K-12 Teachers & Classrooms Projects on November 18 and 19, attendees will have an opportunity to share feedback directly with two PIs through facilitated discussion. There will also be opportunities to provide asynchronous feedback to all PIs about their projects using the embedded Slido.

Although the Zoom platform allows people to use phone audio alone for calls, MSN strongly encourages all participants to join the convening through a video-enabled device (e.g., a laptop or desktop computer rather than an iPad or tablet) to ensure the best attendee experience, including the opportunity to see presenters and view their slides. For the happy hour on the Remo platform, all attendees will need to join via a computer because the platform does not support mobile users.

The convening will be audio recorded and convening presenters will receive a copy of an anonymized transcript from their session only. MSN will only be recording video for the Exploring Practice-Responsive Research panel on November 18; the video will only be of the panelists and will not include other attendees.

Digital versions of event materials (e.g., participant lists, in-session materials) are linked in the agenda above; MSN will not be mailing hard copies of these event materials to attendees. However, MSN shipped branded notebooks and fidget toys in advance of the event to any attendees who did not opt out of this on the registration form.
