Ethics Of Field Trials Involving Psychological Interventions

The rise of online education platforms and connectivity in traditional schools has made it possible to deliver standardized messages and instruction to large numbers of students. As a result, a novel class of large-scale, web-based field trials involving psychological interventions has raised a set of important ethical questions.

Members of the Student Experience Research Network are taking the lead in addressing these issues. The Network will convene researchers and education stakeholders to discuss emerging ethical questions and reach consensus on a set of standards for web-based field trials featuring psychological interventions.

Objectives

  • Highlight ethical issues in web-based field trials involving psychological interventions
  • Produce a set of widely accepted standards for the ethical conduct of such trials
  • Promote universal adoption of the ethical standards by the R&D community
