Student Experience Research Network is partnering with the Spencer Foundation and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative on a convening that the Spencer Foundation will host in May 2023 focused on student experience and measurement in K-12 education.
Seven projects shed light on how curriculum and instruction, classroom discourse, beliefs about discipline, and other structures shape students’ experience of classroom contexts.
Student Experience Research Network will engage in a strategic sunset and conclude our operations by May 2023. During the next nine months, we will take steps to document and share key lessons from our experience over the past seven years and help seed research-focused capacity in the field to continue movement toward an education system that consistently and equitably centers student experience.
Scholars in the SERN Midcareer Fellows Program are bridging insights from research with timely and important topics in the education sector.
By gathering data on students’ experiences, providing safe and supportive spaces to process the data, and making meaningful shifts in response to student feedback, institutions and systems can enact and expand inclusive and effective instructional practices.
Funder briefing speakers shared insights related to student organizing and leadership, participatory governance and budgeting processes, family outreach, and the stakeholders in postsecondary education who may be overlooked or face barriers to participation in changemaking efforts.
Field-level enabling conditions – including funding and accountability structures, research, community organizing, and messaging and legal work – are necessary to align resources and public support with effective strategies for improving students’ experiences in school.
